At 11:30 a.m. on May 29, 1953, Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa congratulated themselves with a handshake and then a hearty embrace. At 29,035 feet above sea level, they were standing on the top of the world. They were the first men to summit Mount Everest.
On Friday, Jan. 10 at 8 p.m., the Rappahannock Association for the Arts and the Community (RAAC) Library Series features photographer Anne Reiser, whose recently released book, Sir Edmund Hillary and the People of Everest, celebrates the 50th anniversary of that remarkable feat while shining a new light upon the legendary conqueror of Mount Everest.
