A few months ago the Virginia Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) transferred ownership of the building on Main Street to the SVRS, an action that we greatly appreciate. However, the building was constructed in 1949. and because we did not own it, we were limited in what maintenance and improvements we could do. Since obtaining title, we have put on a badly needed roof. In the coming months we will be making other improvements.
Running a fire or rescue squud costs money. It's great to have new EMTs, but training and equipping ,*them is expensive, more than $1,000 for each new EMT. Maintaining and equipping our ambulances is another mqjor expense. The county fire levy covers some costs, but tar from all. Every squad in the county must raise additional operating funds through fund drives, events, and other meuns.
Recently SVRS sent out a request for contributions to those in the Sperryville area. We hope the letter reached everyone, but it may have missed some residents. Despite the tight economy, the response so far has been generous and gratifying, and we thank you all very much for helping us and the community. If you have not contributed, we urge you to do so. If you live outside the SVRS service area, please contribute to your local squud. If you have time, consider joining your local squud.
