Moisture stress adversely affects virtually every physiotagcal process in the plant. The first response is closure of leaf stomata, which is an opening that regulates water loss acting as a defense mechanism. However, with the stomata dosed, cartoon dioxide is not absorbed and photosynthesis is curtailed, limiting growth and increasing susceptibility to insect and disease pests.

IMater stress also inhibits thw production of essential materials. In addition to less carbohydrate (food) production, proteins, enzymes, growth regulators mineral nutrients and other essential materials for life are not produced or translocated, further contnbutmg to reduced growth and development.

Restricted growth and vitality are mmite6ted by stunted chlorotic leaves, premature defoliation, crown thinning and poor shoot growth. Droughtstressed trees often attract insect pests and disease organisms, including borers, bark beetles, and canker and root disease tungt which accelerate decline and may ultimately cause death of the plant.
