II anyone wants to know what it s like to be a soap box derby driver, in just a few weeks they can check with Will Ubben, the newest driver to join the Piedmont Area Soap Box Derby.
Will was chosen to be a driver by the Rappahannock County Sheriffs Office after they were presented with a new derby kit at a soap box derby clinic held this past Saturday in Culpeper.
The car was made available to the Sheriffs Office by generous anonymous Rappahannock donors who last year also provided the funds necessary to present cars to the Sperryville, Castleton, and Flint Hill voluntary fire departments for their participation in the 2008 soap box derby held in Culpeper.
Sheriff Connie Smith, along with friends and members of her office, attended the clinic where Thom Pellikaan, Rappahannock County Derby Committee member and a strong advocate for youth participation in this event, presented the Sheriff s Office its car before a crowd of fellPw derby drivers and parents.
Last year’s local derby drew a record number of 125 drivers, ranging in age from 8 to 17, making this derby the second largest in the world. Of special significance, Brandon Feagan of Culpeper, won the World Championship in Masters Rally Division.
In just two years, the excitement of derby participation has grown from no entrants from Rappahannock County to this year’s total entry of seven cars, including ones sponsored by the Inn At Little Washington, and Chauteauville Foundation/Castleton Festival.
Will Ubben resides at Chester Gap and is a 5th grade student at Rappahannock County Elementary School. He has a special interest in target shooting, rock collecting, and learning about wildlife, however his career goal is to become a police officer like his dad. You ask him why, and he says “to stop bad people.” Will also plays the baritone in the school band.
The local derby will be held June 20 on Blue Ridge Avenue in Culpeper with the winners competing in the All American Soap Box Derby to be held in Akron, Ohio.
