volunteer fire company was on the scene by 1:30 p.m. along with a volunteer company from Front Royal. Eventually, fire companies from Flint Hill, Amissville and Washington arrived. The fire had already consumed a “good 12-14 acres,” said Brown.
The Virginia Department of Forestry was called in with specially equipped dozers to begin containing the fire on the hill.
For the next several hours, crews plowed firebreaks through the forest, and forestry officials then began to “backfire” the area to bum all of the fuel on the ground.
“This is our bailiwick,” said Harold Fischer, a forestry technician as he fin'd up loose brush and leaves within the perimeter.
Using rakes and shovels, crews kept the smoldering fire within the perimeter. They even got help from a grateful Davis who lent a hand with a shovel.
By nightfall, most of the leafy mold on the ground had burned, and there were a few smoldering brushfires within the ring of trenches cut by the dozers. Woodvilie brush fire
