or drop them, surreptitiously, in their neighbors' yards. We know that RappCats will be inundated once again with calls from people who desperately need help with these animals that they find on roadsides or that have been dropped off in their yards or bams.
There is no better time for us to open the door a bit into RappCats and tell our community not only what we’re all about, but some of what we have experienced over the last 18 months.
Last spring, a few months after RappCats was founded as a nonprofit, all-volunteer cat rescue organization, people became aware of us and our mission. The phone began to ring.
While we received some generous offers of help — both financially and with volunteer time — we also got an overwhelming number of heartbreaking phone calls. Some were devastating in their desperation and some — downright evil (the only way to describe them).
Calls came from people who felt responsible for — and were feeding — upwards of 30 or more abandoned and/or feral cats. One family inherited them from a deceased relative who cared for them. Another, whose neighbors had 40-50 cats running around, unfed, continually giving birth, unseen by vets - called. Could we help?
One memorable call came in from a man who continually posted missives to Rappnet (the countywide Internet chat room) extolling peace, karma, love, good will. However, he told us that a stray cat was bothering him and his mother for a week, hanging on to their screen door, how ling, hungry' and thirsty. He threatened that if we didn't come over that afternoon and take it away, he was going to shoot or strangle it.
Another woman insisted we take the kittens from her pregnant cat that she refused to fix. When I told her we didn't have the facilities, she told me she would report me to my boss and hung up on me Others have also threatened us with reporting us to our “bosses" when we can’t provide the services they demand.
