Translation of the American Red Cross national 1953 campaign goal of $93,000,000 into terms of individual and community service was made for 8ouths.de Virginia chapter leaders here Wednesday by Glenn Whistler, of the ARC'S Eastern Area office, at Alexandria. Mr. Whistler placed particular rmphasls on the Red Cross pro gram of services to the Armed Forces and veterans, which ac counts for 40.8 per cent of the funds to be raised in the March campaigns. He also explained to chapter chairmen, campaign leaders, and executive board members repre senting nine county chapters in this area, the forthcoming Gam ma Globulin program, which will be operated as part of the ARC'S blood collection program. Gamma Globulin Nationally, the Gamma Globu lin program of blood collection will add $7,000,000 to the funds required for 1953 operations, he pointed out. Gamma Globulin, a blood deriv ative, has been shown to be ef fective against polio virus which attacks the nervous system and products physical handicaps. Research in the past two years, Mr. Whistler explained, has dem onstrated Gamma Globulin's suc cess in this respect, and the Red Cross has beer, commissioned by national health authorities to un dtirtake the collection of blood for this purpose. The derivative. Gamma Gloub lin. will be distributed to state health departments and will be used by them in polio epidemics expected to be encountered in the next two summers.
