Report Outlines Roads In Amelia Bridge Building Marks 1952 Work The 1952 roads program in Amelia county was directed pri marily at bridge construction and spot surfacing on unpaved roads. Resident Engineer L. 13 Ward said. Outlining the year's accom plishments in an end of the year report, the engineer reported that on Route 609, a 350-foot bridge was erected over the Appomattox River between Amelia and Pow hatan counties. The cost of $116, 000 was borne by both counties. Other new bridges included a 28-foot concrete span on Route 644 over Flat CrecK, a 70-foot bridge on Route 615 over Deep Creek, and a 24-foot bridge on Route 600 over Wintercomack Creek. Two small structures were replaced by culverts. Some 15 miles of dirt roads were stabilized or strengthened, with approximately 3000 tons of stone used for spot treatments of weak places. Ten miles of paved loads were resurfaced with bituminous material. Amelia county has 118 miles of hard surfaced roads and 55 bridges in the secondary system. Total secondary mileage in the county amounts to 306. In the coming year, improve ments planned include the erec tion of a new bridge over Flat Creek on Route 642, west of Route 360. and the hard surfac ing of approximately 10 miles of unsurfaced roads, Mr. Ward said. An outstanding accomplish ment of the 1952 secondary roads program in Nottoway county was the hard surfacing of Route 625. construction which provided a paved .road from Burkeville to Nottoway Court House through the southern section of the coun ty, according to the end of tlie year report.
