In Virginia, following the custom of the colonial Church of England, Parishes follow geographical lines, rather than communities or cities. Thus Bromfield Parish comprises the counties of Madisofi and Rappahannock.
Bromfield Parish was cut’off from St. Mark’s Parish. Cul- ' peper, in 1752. In 1735 it had been ordered that a “Chapel of Ease” be built between Shaw’s Mountain and the River. This was a wooden church built about 1740. After 1752, a brick church was built near Slate Mills, with Rev. Adam Menzies as its first Rector. It is a matter of record that George Washington, while making surveys in this vicinity, worshipped in this church. It was known as the “F T” church. After the Revolution this church was not used, and was later torn down, and now only a brick marker, made from the original bricks, has been erected on the site.
