Fox Attacks

School Children

The five children of George Smoot beat off an attaching fox Tuesday afternoon on their way home from school. Hanging in age from 7 to 18. the children left the school bus on the Harris Hollow raod and began a two-mile walk on the open road through fields to their homeWhen

the fox came across the open field toward them, they began to grab stones to defend themselves. They killed the fox with the stones and then started running home.

The father. George Smoot, reports that when the children arrived at home they were so breathless and frightened* that he wondered if they had their story mixed up. He went back to the open field and there was the body of the dead fox, just as the children had reported.

Mr. Smoot brought the animal to the Game Warden, but the head was so crushed by stones that It was of no value tor examination.

Mr. Smoot reports that he has lost three calves and two dogs from what he supposed to be rabies and the veterinarian agreed with him in the case of one of the dogs. The dogs had been givn the rabies shots about five weeks before their death.

Mr. Smoot is alarmed now because he had cattle loose in the open field where the children killed the fox and he has no way of knowing if they have been bit or not.

The children refused to go to school Wednesday morning, following their experience of Tuesday afternoon, and Mr. Smoot aaid he could hardly blame them. He says that he will have to make arrangements to bring them to the school bus in the morning and return to meet them in the afternoon.
