Our New Associate
Now that Rappahannock is in the district with Fauquier, we can hope for the best.
There have been no particular reasons to think we will have any red carpet of welcome rolled out. All we can hope is that the Fauquier people won’t find our association too unpleasant.
Of course, the shoe fits on the other foot, too. There was an open expression in the meeting at Richmond, when one Rappahannock citizen stated that his grandfather had moved from Fauquier to Rappahannock because the Fauquier people were “horse-loving and * whiskey-drinking” and the grandson called that Rappahannock not be placed in the Delegate district with Fauquier.
It was plainly stated that Fauquier didn’t want anyone with them in the re-districting, but they did voice the sentiment that if it had to be anyone, let it l»e Rappahannock. Interpretation of that remark can be both complimentary and uncomplimentaiy.
All the discussion has gone pro and con. Some folks think that insufficient effort was put forth by our former associate, Culpeper, in order to keep us with them. Other folks think that the population numbers would have been too unfair to allow this four-county district (Orange, Madison, Culpeper, and Rappahannock) to be balanced against the single county of Fauqpier. Some folks resented the appearance that Rappahanwas being dropped about wherever it suited other people.
