Some one should recommend to bus and train stations that they help the waiting passengers pass the time away. I know a dentist who puts a large dictionary in his waiting room. On my last visit I learned two new words before the dentist cleaned my teeth and ex* tracted my money.

The first word was “aardvark” and—-so the dictionary says, and I've not located a person who argues about it—this thing is a large, nocturnal, burrowing mammal of Africa, subsisting largely on termites, and having a long, extensible tongue, clawd, and conspicuously long ears. I'm not sure I’d know one if I saw it, but then, again, I’m not anticipating a trip to Africa; and in the zoo the names are written over the cages. That takes care of the aardvark; past, present, and future.

The second word, hit at random, was “serendipity.” This is a noun describing the gift some people possess of finding valuable or agreeable things or ideas without searching for them. (That should not worry me too much.)

I think I’d better start studying Latin; the English language is entirely too complicated,
