Jock Brown is getting ready to qualify as one of the world’s meanest men. That scoundrel has turned loose several pairs of New Mexico jack-rabbits in the county. Che fox hounds are so be-fuddled they can’t tell what to do.,.
The animals look like rabbits, according to hounds, and yet the » long - eared long - legged rascals can out-run ' and out-jump anything the local hounds have ever seen. Down near Boston the other day, a fellow’s hounds jumped the scent of one' of the jack-rabbits. For all we know, they may still he running him! That jack-rabbit will run into a corner and then turn straight around and run back through the pack of hounds, leaving them a hundred yards behind before they get turned around!
There is some speculation as to what’s going to happen the first time the pink-coated boys get out and the hounds take after one of those “john-rabbits.” We’ve heard some stories of the hounds chasing a deer; of course, the, deer heads straight for deep water, and the hounds get back home ten days later after a trip to the Shenandoah river.
Jock Brown says he had a perfectly good reason tor turning those jack-rabbits loose. Accord* ing to his story, his phenomenal beagles were not being kept in trim by the local rabbits, hi fact (and again, please note, I quote Mr. Brown) it waa no sport for his beagles; they are such superior beagle hounds that the ordinary rabbit won’t even give them setting-up exercises; hence, Jock was forced to import 20-foot-vaulting New Mexico jack-rabbits.
