Several of Rappahannock’s leading citizens and landowners have donated cash, many have written letters. What is it all about and what are the results? What more i$ needed ?? ?
Some of you know the Rappahannock Commodity Committees (horticulture, agronomy, livestock, and poultry) have been trying to get a complete survey of the soils in our county. Why—because such will reveal in detail the physical characteristics or properties of our soils on any given acre of land in question. These physical characteristics determine what that acre of land is. capable of producing economically. Chemical content of soils; or the amount of the major plant food elements such as phosphates, potassium, magnesium and calcium; have a great influence on productivity, but regardless of how abundant they may be in a soil their influence is governed by the physical characteristics of the soil in which they are associated.
Now it would sound (and be) silly, were anyone to keep a sow to insure a good milk supply for one’s family. Neither would it be sensible for anyone to use a concrete mixer to stir up a dozen or so eggs. Yes, these are extreme examples, but after all it is the knowlcdae of their structure
Few of us can ever become expert soil technicians and it’s not necessary that many of us try to. What we should know is what these technicians find out for us through a soil survey just as a doctor may find out through his examination what may be best for our ailment.
So much for what it is all about Now for the most redent results and I quote a letter dated April 27th from Dr. S. S. Obershain, in charge of Soil Survey Work in Virginia:
“Dear Billy:—
I have your*letter of April 23rd indicating that you and your co-workers have done one of the most sincere jobs towards obtaining a survey, of anyone I have known.
I assure you that we are bending every effort towards coming this year, and our plans include such a move. There are a number of “difficulties wich we have not yet been able to get around, which makes it impossible for us to make a definite announcement yet
