These two topics were dramatically tied togeter for me the day when I returned from Roanoke and found in my mail a letter from a seventeenyear old Italian school boy. Pfcviously this boy had written to thank me for sending him information about our national parks and recreation facilities and in my reply I had commented on my impression, during two trips to Italy, of an apparent misunderstanding of our European aid program. I expressed the fear that many Italians thought we were trying to dominate their economic and political life whereas all we asked in return for our billions of dollars was assurance that we would have worthwhile allies in a free world and respected, as ours does, the sacred night of the individual.
In his reply to this letter the Italian school boy said he must regretfully agree with what I said about the attitude of some of his people and he illustrated this by telling of some communist skiing companions who refused to believe the Soviet Union was not a "paradise.”
He then wrote: "I am very grateful to your People for his help, which allowed my country to rise moral if America, instead of presentagain. But I think it would be more ing us millions and millions of dollars would make us able to earn them, liberalizing trades, lowering and reducing customs duties and migration "We must learn your economic way of life (high production and high wages) to allow greater welfare, and we must learn to unite Europe because only this way is good to increase standard life. But the same progress which obliges Europe to unite, acts on the whole world. Certainly it is necessary, as you say, to fight for a free world, but it must be a truly free one and not only by half. I would not like it to happen
