April 30 is also the birthday of Sir 'John Lubbock, English naturalist (If that’s not true, you can sue the encylopaedia.) He was a big banker and politician, so the story goes, but be is Chiefly known as the man who had a tame wasp. He caught the wasp young, fed her on his hand, stroked her on the back, and carried her in a bottle on his journeys, and she only stung him once when she was flustfated by a train conductor.

Tomorrow will be the first day of May. If a maiden wakes early, finds a four-leaf clover, and then washes her face in the early morning dew, she wiH be guaranteed beauty—so the tales say. If she finds a dime, instead of the four-leaf clover, she can purchase a cake of soap and wash her face, and she’ll be dean—and that would be more practical if less romantic.
