The cost of wintering the beef cow must be charged to the calf. With feed shortage existing on many of our farms and hay prices rather high compared to calf values here are some tips which may help you reduce winter feeding cost.
1. Feed poorest hay first while cattle have summertime-stored supplies of minerals and’vitamins. Feed the best hay when the calf arrives and milking starts.
2. Always feed a balanced ration. Small amounts of feed will go further and digestion will be improved.
3. If you have a limited amounf of roughage, stretdi it twith grain, by letting one pound of grain equal 4Vz to 5 lbs. of hay. Don’t reduce roughage more than fifty* per cent.
4. If legume content of hay gets below five pounds feed a protein supplement at one to one and a half pounds per cow per day.
5. Twenty pounds ground corn cobs and 3^ pounds protein-molasses supplement may be the cheapest daily cow ration you can I
