My trip was sponsored by Sears, Roebuck and Co. My project wa Home Improvement or decorating I didn’t win in one year—it took ? ■ seven, but I still didn’t earn all . this. It’s like a dream, to see and live through a week like this.
The Virginia delegation left or\4 the Norfolk and Western’s Powhatan Arrow on Friday, November 26. As we rolled across the country, our 30 delegates and 6 leaders got to know each others It--™ was a wonderful group, and by the1 end of the week over a fourth had won national honors.
We boarded Pullman in Cincinnati. I had nevet slept on a train before but after such an exciting day, I did sleep. We arrived very early Saturday morning, ’midst snow and fog. We didn’t see the sun again ‘til we got back to Virginia on December 3.
We were assigned rooms in the Conrad Hilton, the largest hotel in the world, with over 3,000 rooms, its own power plant, laundry and stores.
That -morning we shopped in Marshall Field’s and ate lunch under the lovely 4-story high Christmas tree. ~ .. * Back at the hotel, we greeted delegates arriving every hour. Westerners in big hats, southerners who hadn’t seen snow in nine years, an American Indian wh° was so American he didn’t know what his name meant in Hopi, and 4-H’ers from Alaska and Puerto Rica were all there.
I found this one of the most memorable experiences at Congress, this meeting boys and girls from all over our land. It made you stand up straight when the lights were out and a spot light was on the waving flag and we sang “The Star Spangled Banner”
