On Wednesday evening, we attended the International Livestock Exhibition where we saw the evening horse show. Then Curtis Candy Co. gave us a box supper, while our own 4-H band from Shawnee, Kansas, played. The group toured the exhibits where we saw the grand champions, including the 4-H. girls’ bull, which later sold for $15 a pound.
Later, we formed in lines of four in the ramps. We marched into the arena, to the music of the .band, and formed 4 giant H’s with 30 columns of 4 in each “leg” of the letter. As we repeated our pledge, we lighted flash lights, so the giant letters glowed in the darkened arena. How inspiring to hear 1,300 voices singing “Sons of the soil are we, men of the coming years!” That’s another moment I’ll never forget, seeing the flags of our 48 states and the 23 foreign countries ranged around the edge with the 4-H’s in the center.
On Thursday night, we had a farewell party, came to our rooms and packed. We even packed our gift thermos jugs full—no space went to waste. ~
Friday, our Virginia delegation went to Don McNeil’s Breakfast Club. Two of ou r number were on the show and afterwards, I drew cards for door prizes. We enjoyed this very much, though we nearly went to sleep while waiting. At 1 p.m. we boarded the train for home. The North Carolina dele
