We also stood up and cheered when “Carry Me Back” or ‘‘Dixie” was played. Of course, the band also played “Yankee Doodle” . and “Home On the Range.” After all this one band played “Hail, hail the gang’s all here.” That’s . really the way we felt, especially when we heard speakers like the Honorable John Foster Dulles and Ezra Taft Benson. We felt •> proud to be Americans, and to be 4-H members, 1300 out of 2 million, the largest rural youth group in the world.
Saturday evening we had a special show at the WLS barn’ dance, oldest in America. We saw JHomer and Jethro, Woody Mercer and many other top bam dance entertainers. )
That night our state had its own banquet, where we learned that 8 of our number had won $300 scholraships as national winners. One of our boys, Edward Felton, was absolute tops in the nation in public speaking. Three of f our members presided at meals during the week.
