Educators believe advantages ot consolidation outweigh the good points of the “little red” sch^ls. Progress in road building and motor transportation has made it possible to hire more and bettertrained teachers. Larger buildings offer better facilities at lower cost ' per pupil. - In the school year 1917-18, 196,000 one-room schools represented 71 per cent of all the country s school buildings. By 1940, the number had dropped to 114,000, and by 1952 only 51,800 singleunit buildings were left.
Most of the remaining oneteacher schools offer- instruction -only up -to the sixth grade. Using primitive equipment, they are scattered in rural areas. A few
