The family’s entire savings— $1600.00 in bills which was in an upstairs room—went up in smoke. Nothing in the house but the dining room furniture was saved. Father, children and grandchildren were left with only the clothes they had on.
Someone notified the Rappahannock Chapter of the American Red Cross of the fire and the 'Phillips family’s plight. On thesame day, Les Phillips was contacted by a Red Cross worker who arranged for Hackley s Store to supply the Phillips’ needs.
There are people who may ^wonder “just what the Red Cross does” besides nursing and first aid work. The Red Cross contribution to West Phillips is one small example among thousands of varied emergencies in which this organization, comes to the rescue with material help. ' In this instance, the local chap> ^r was called immediately after the fire. In any emergency of this sort, the sooner the Red Cross is notified,* the better—preferably within 24 hours. The Philips are grateful to the many people—both, white and colored—who offered them their help. Among them were Sam Compton, who allowed them to move into a vacant house of his; and the members of the Methodist Church who donated clothing and other essentials.
It is believed a defective chimney caused this destructive fire.
