But in a more particular sense, this Day is one on which we remember the fallen who wore the two colors now equally cherished by all Americans: the Union Blue and the legendary Confederate Gray. / The Civil Was was our national epic. It remains our American Iliad. It divided the country in blood . and then united it forever. Possibly it was the bne war that was worth its great and terrible cost in anguish and suffering., For in the thunders that shook the continent in the sixties America died—and was born again. Without the Civil War the meaning of America would not be clear. Without its splendor and sacrifice every American would be infinitely poorer. So on this Day we think of the men, North and y. South, who fought at Chickamauga and Cold Harbor, who stood and died in the woods at the Antietam and stormed the Peach Orchard at Gettysburg. We think of them .... and we bow our heads in proud and grateful Remembrance.
