SLATEMILLS

For many years the women of Slate Mills and vicinity met from time to time with the Home Demonstration Agent» fot the county - for information, for inspiration and for fun, all of which they received in abundance. A couple of times formal organization was attempted, but not successfully. Mrs. L. R. Hudson loyally persisted in trying tq keep up interest by holding meetings, usually in her own home, and at very irregular intervals.
During the last week of July 1954, Mrs. Hudson and Mrs. Robert J. Boyd attended the annual meeting of the State Federation of H. D. Clubs and the Institute of Rural Affairs held at V. P. I. in Blacksburg. The. inspiration received from this experience led to renewed interest in H. D. work, even though Mrs. Hudson moved from the county in the Fall.
In November 1954, at a meeting held at the home of Mrs. Jennie Miller, Slate Mills H. D. Club was finally organized with the following officers elected and installed for the next year: President, Mrs. Joseph Powers; Secretary-Treasurer, Mrs. Boyd; Program Development Leader, Mrs. C. Bernard Dorsey; Federation Goal Chairman, Mrs. Waver W. Kennedy. At the December meeting Mrs. Boyd was appointed Club Historian and since then has kept up a scrapbook of club activities, accomplishments, information sheets, and records for reference. This has proved very useful as a source of material on projects considered.
The planned program has been followed at regular monthly meetings. Mrs- Dorsey, like Mrs. Powers and Mrs. Boyd, is a newcomer to the Slate Mills community, and all these ladies have been attending outside planning and training meetings in an effort to increase program interest among the members. In order to be of service to the community the Club has given serious, thought and discussion to providing some form of community recreation, being concerned with channeling the energy of young people into wholesome activity. In addition, a project of improving rural mailboxes has been undertaken.
