Lee, gave us' lunch with strong black tea and so we were! able to finish the “patch” and go homo with Peggy. The next day we took a trip about 50 miles farther “up north.” On the way we| caught glimpses of the great northern river, the An Sable. There was an annual canoe race in progress, that lasted for about 24 hours as it was 240 miles long from Grayling to Oscoda, and a strenous course too. There is much training and preparation made for the race, some of the teams going over the course five or six times during the summer. The canoests wear shorts and cover their bare backs and arms with thick grease for protection from sun and insects. Som< appear almost devoured by gnats which bite viciously. The An Sable is wide and intensly blue, great trees grow* down to its banks and it is the source of electric power for much of the state.
High above the river is a great monument to the lumbermen of early Michigan days. A huge bronze statue of three woodsmen, one with a “peavy” or cant book, one with a compass and one with crosscut saw. There is > small park here and everyone takes pictures before the monument.
