Just three days remain before Virginians in all walks of life will make known their feelings through the ballot 3>oxes throughout the state concerning the proposals of the Gray Commission dealing with public education. «
While we are mindful of the strong, and in many in- > .stances, fanatically bitter opposition on the part of some Virginians to mixing the races in the public schools, we .Also recognize the fact that a greater danger will be posed if Virginia’s public school system is wrecked as implementation of the Gray Plan will surely accomplish. Instead of pulling up from the 42nd rung in the ladder made up of. our 48 states as to educational standing^ the Old Dominion '■will be shoved nearer the bottom once the drastic proposals of the Governor’s Commission on Education are enacted into law.
Are we in Virginia going forward or going back to the position we were in a few years ago when we had to say “thank God for Arkansas’’—-Virginia ranked 47th in education and Arkansas 48th.
