“The recent order of the Supreme Coutipf the United States requires an obedience to a law which millions of people in all good consci; ence cannot bring themselves to obey. To many thoughtful and patriotic persons this order goes far beyond the traditional functions' and prerogatives of the court. It denies the validity of the philosophy of Thomas Jefferson and exalts the philosophy of Alexander Hamilton to a degree which he himself never foresaw. It is an invasion- of those time honored liberties enjoyed by parents in rearing' their children in ways which they consider most fitting. It is a first step in America towards setting up the Federal government in mandatory control of the more intimate and private responsibilities of the individual citizen. Aa such it threatens to throw • into jail many devoted public servants responsible for the education of Virginia’s oncoming generation of children. It represents a. philosophy of government which may ultimately become a western version of the Russian Politburo in other areas of our lives. , * “Every voter who is against this sort of thing will support the proposed constitutional amendment as his only method of registering his protest.
