“In the present debate preachers and church groups generally are proclaiming their opposition. They • are all good, earnest, and conscientious people, my honored colleagues ift the church and its ministry. But I can not help but think that they have not thought this thing through. In a few words they are moved by the statement that ‘the spirit of Christian love demands that white and black children should be mixed in the same school room.’ My answer is that the spirit of Christian love demands that we do what seems best, intellectually, morally, socially and spiritually for the children of both races. And I believe sincerely that the intellectual, moral, social, and spiritual welfare of both races can best be attained in separate schools. There were wide racial and national cleavages in the time of Jesus but I nowhere find Him commanding His disciples to crusade for racial or national amaliamations. His own ministry was to ‘the lost sheep of the house of Israel’ and only at the last did He commission the disciples to preach, teach, and baptize among fell nations. And even then He seems to have thought of Christian Unity, as a peculiar fellowship in the Gospel transcending all national or racial
