Outlook , .1 ' HOGS Unexpected strength in prices in the past couple of weeks may draw more hogs to market in the next week, if that happens, prices may move into the normal seasonal slide, unless colder weather pulls demand up proportionally.
Higher, earlier slaughter, 6 to 8 per cent above last year for- the past three weeks, plus 11% fewer hogs on farms makes the fall outlook more cheerful. It looks now like the low price could come in late October, like it was in 1953. Arid that low will be considerably above last year’s $11.70 low (Chicago).
Fall farrowing prospects are around 6% below last year. Last June, the estimate was set at 9 ,r below. _
Prices last week were: Western markets, steady to 50c higher at $16.50 to $17; Richmond yards, up 25c to 17.25 to $17.50; Virginia auctions, 65c higher at ,17. and Baltimore, 75c to $1 higher at $18.25.
