Married 68 Years
.Tuesday October 2nd was the 68th wedding anniversary of one of our most highly respected colored couples, Mr. and Mrs. William Carter, who live on the road to Sperryville just a little beyond Flat Woods. * ‘
They were married at Slate Mills, Va. in 1888. The Lord blessed them with fourteen children, seven are still living and are “good children.”
Whpn asked to give the main reason for their long and happy life together, Mr. Carter answered with a smile and a question, “Didn't we promise the Lord to , look after and love each other when we got married?” His answer was sufficient.
Mr. Carter was born three miles south of Stone House Mountain in Culpeper County, and came to Rappahannock when quite a small boy and lived on the “Gibson Place.”
His wife, who was Margaret Jackson was born in Fluvanna County.. Her mother told her she was born “five years after General Lee surrendered at Appomattox.” She was just a small child when her parents brought her to Rappahannock. They lived on the Jim Turk Thornhill place.
