How long must I work in order to qualify for social security benefits? Miss Florence Schaffner, Field Representative of the Alexandria Sosial Security Office, said * this is a question frequently, asked, arid here is the answer: The amount of work will vary from 154 to 10 years, depending upon a person’s date of birth. If you reached retirement age, (62 for women, 65 for men), before July 1, 1954, you would be eligible with 1 54 years. Most people now reaching age 65 need to have at least 454 years of earnings on their social security account. People reaching 65 later will need even more credits. The general rule is that you wifi need one quarter of work (earned after 1936) for each two quarters from 1950 until the year you reach retirement age.
