Figures recently released by the Virginia extension service are based on results at 27 sales in which 33,882 calves were sold by Virginia cattlemen. The 14,735 Angus calves in the sales averaged $4.32 more per head than the next highest breed. The Angus sale average was $134.82 pe~ head compared to $130.50 per head for the other breed. The difference per hundredweight was 79 cents.
Angus steers in the sales averaged $31.15 per cwt. and Angus heifers sold at an average of $26.46 per-huhdred. Angus was the only breed with a sale average higher tharl the average of all the calves sold.
The main reason for the superior record of the Angus calves in the sales was their quality. Thirty per cent of the Angus steers graded either Fancy of Choice compared to 22 per cent for the next highest breed and 34 per cent of the Black
