“The Civil War was not necessary, as claimed by some, to make us truly a united nation,” Dr. Francis Pendleton Gaines declared when he spoke Sunday in Washington, D. C.
He spoke at ceremonies in the Washington Cathedral to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Peace Convention, called by Virginia in a futile attempt to avoid the war. The ceremony was sponsored by the Virginia Civil War Commission.
Dr. Gaines, who is chancellor of Washington and Lee University, said that the Peace Convention was right in its undertaking, even though it failed.
"War, with its tidal waves of destruction and slaughter and grief, is the answer to no human problem, and it is an insult to the intelligence that God gave us that we cannot find other answers,” Dr. Gaines said.
During the ceremony a large bronze plaque was dedicated to hoiioi all those who participated in the Peace Convention. This historic meeting was called at the request of the Virginia General Assembly and was held in the old Willard Hotel February 4-27, 1861. Altogether 121 delegates took part, representing 21 of the then existing 34 states. The plaque, donated by the Virginia Civil War Commission, will be placed on the front of the Willard Hotel later this week.
