President-elect John M. Camp, Jr., Franklin, introduced James W. Hamner, Jr Richmond, as **Mr. Virginia Heart of lyol. Mr. Hamner who is serving as a Heart Fund Volunteer, underwent heart surgery last Spring. He is now entiiely well. Dr. Benjamin M. Baker, Jr., Associate Professor of Mediane, Johns Hopkins University, addressed the audience on “Progress Against Heart Disease. _ He is one of a group studying the relationship between fat in the diet and hardening of the arteries. -The speaker pointed out that over half of the deaths caused by diseases ot the heart and circulatory system are “directly related to atherosclerosis or hardening of the arteries.” '
He said that,at one time hardening of,the arteries was considered a wearing out disease of the aged, but now we know it is not. “It is a progressive disease wheih does not depend on age,” he said.
“There is no single cause of atherosclerosis. It is a constellation of causes, some of which are heredity, lack of physical activity, stress and strain, tobacco, over-nutritiOn, sex, and diet.”
>He said that atherosclerosis below the age of 50 is principally the disease of men, with the ratio being about 25-1. This age group of women have the protection afforded by female sex harmones.
Dr. Baker stressed also the importance of cardiac rehabilitation.
