Seat Belts, A Safety
Measure Aj j; [“A seat belt could save your life Or reduce your chances of serious injury if you should become involved in a motor vehicle accident!”
j Dr. L. O. Fears, Jr., M. D., Director .County Health Department, made, this statement as he urged motorists to install seal belts in their cars and use them to help reduce the toll of injury and death in traffic accidents on highways, j “In a crash that would normally eject you from your car, your chances of survival are five times greater if seat belts are worn,” the Health Director stated. “An d when one considers that two-thirds of our traffic deaths occur at speeds under fifty miles and hour, die importance of the seat belt in restraining the driver or passenger, thus minimizing chances of severe injury from contact with unyielding metal and glass structures with in the car, is obvious.” ^ ,
"Get seat belts for yourself and ybur family,” Dr. Fears urged. "Use them for all trips. The best available statistics show that 75% of the deaths occur within 25 miles of the victim’s residence.” j Here are five benefits that seat belts afford you if you crash: j 1. Keep you from being ejected.
2. Reduce the impact if you should hit an interior surface, i 3. Help keep ihe driver in his seat after a jolt and enable him to maintain better control of his car.
4. Help you' survive crashes 'which would otherwise mean certain death. ! 5. Reduce fatigue by keeping the driver in a comfortable upright position while driving longer distances.
“But,” Dr Fears pointed out, "seat belts are no substitute for common sense. The best way to avoid being killed or injured is not to crash. But, if you crash in- spite of all you can do to avoid it, you’ll be glad you’re wearing your seat belt.” I \ . u
