Sawfly Less
Prominent In Pines
The Virginia pine sawfly, which has been epidemic throughout much of eastern Virginia since 1958, is expected to be less active this spring. An insect survey recently completed by the Virginia Division of Forestry indicates a possible drop in sawfly damage over the Piedmont section of the state. Predictions are based upon an extensive sampling for over-wintering eggs of die sawfly laid on pine foliage last November. Ten trees were sampled in each of one hundredforty selected pine stands in eleven counties with branches being shot from trees for sampling. A 650 mile road survey was also made outside the sample areas to help delineate the range of die infestation and to predict its future course.
