Cancer Fund Drive
The American Cancer Society estimates that 8,900 Virginians will develope cancer during 1961 and, at present j rates, only onethird will survive.
Even though a third will be saved, the figure should and could be “one-half saved.” Earlier and better treatment is saving the lives of two out of every six persons who get cancer today, but the survival rate couldi be three out of every six. That is, if more persons would have annual medical'check ups and if they would heed the danger signals of cancer and see their physicians promptly.
In Virginia, several hundred persons die of cancer each month. Preliminary figures for the state show that in 1960 there were 4,627 deaths from cancer.
In the United States, cancer is the second leading cause of death. The national death rate has been rising steadily aind in 1960 about 265,000 Americans died of cancer; in 1959 the figiure was 259,000.
