The Mountain Run Watershed occupies an area of 28,700 acres in central Culpeper County. Culpeper, the county seat, depends on thia stream which flows through the town as their source of water for the municipal supply. The towa on numerous occasions has been plagued by both floods and water shortages. The Town Council was interested in co-sponsoring and developing the watershed not only from this standpoint but also from the angle of improving agriculture in its trade area, as well. All of these factors prompted the town to co-sponsor the project along with the Culpeper Soil Conservation District and to lend financial support to the entire project.
The Mountain Run Watershed Project is basically agricultural with flood prevention and water storage as secondary features. The application of proper conservation measures to each acre in the watershed has been the goal of the Culpeper Soil Conservation District and the Watershed Association. Protection of lands above the flood retarding structures is paramount in preventing siltation of the lakes and ultimate loss of the water storage. The treatment of each and every acre of land in the watershed according to its needs and capability for conservation and improvement is the basic fundamental in the development of any watershed.
