I wo prisoners escaped rrom tne Rappahannock County jail last Wednesday night. This is the second time in a few months that a jreak has been staged in the rounty. Ned Atkins of Sperryville, who Is charged with breaking and entering Bradley Atkins Service Station at Sperryville and Charlie Stringfellow of Amissville who faces the same charge for entering HackL-y’s Store in Amissville are the two escapees. Atkins is also wanted in Page County for auto theft.
According to reliable sources, the prisoners over powered Guy Burke, the jailer, while he was playing Chinese Checkers with them in the cell block. They took the keys, locked Mr. Burke inside and fled.
Trooper John Lowman and Sheriff Critzer spotted, the two men near Amissville Thursday night, but were unable to catch them. However, Stringfellow tired of being hunted and turned himself in Iriday.
