Richmond — About 16 miles of new interstate highway, including one-third of the Capital Beltway in Fairfax County, n expected to open for traffic before Jan. 1, the State Highway Department reported today.
The Department said the new sections of Interstate Routes 495 and 66 in Fairfax and Prince William Counties will give Virginia about 103 miles of highway built to full interstate standards and open to traffic.
With another 202 miles that are under construction, the state has about 30 per cent of the huge, billion dollar interstate program completed or in the contract stage.
The new portions will be the first interstate highways toopen in northern Virginia nd will be on two routes that are expected to carry some of the heaviest traffic volumes in the 1,053 mile system.
Highway Commissioner H. H. Harris said it is hoped the new sections will be of great benefit to the area nd that they will give motorists some idea as to the benefits they may expect from travel on these high-speed, controlledaccess and divided highways.
A section of about seven miles on the Capital Beltway (Interstate 495) between Shirley Highway (US Route 350) at Springfield and US Route 50 (Arlington Boulevard) may be opened to traffic about Dec. 15.
This would be the first portion of the 64-mile Washnigton circumferential highway to carry traffic. Virginia is building 21 mlies of the Beltway, with completion expected in 1963.
Construction of the seven-mile segment, including the interchange at Shirley Highway, cost about 13 million dollars. Contracts on the entire Beltway are now valued at more than 37 million dollars.
