anicolaou smears, a test ior detecting early uterine cancer, are done routinely on all prenatal and postpartum patients. PKU tests are done on all babies. This is a comparatively new test that has proven very valuable in detecting one cause of mental retardation which can be prevented if diagnosed early. During the past fiscal year, 68 visits were made to the maternal | child health clinic; 791 immunizations were given; and 26 pre-school examinations were done. The veneral disease rate in this county continues to be high for a small rural county. A trained VD investigator makes routine visits to assist the public healtih nurse in locating, interviewing, and obtaining diagnosis and treatment, if inincated, for those who have been named as contacts of known cases. These persons may go to their private physician or be seen by Dr. Fears on his days in this county.
During the past year 22 visits have been made to the veneral disease clinic for diagnosis, treat ment or follow-up examinations. Immunizations for selected members of the Virginia State Highway Department is a part of a national effort to immunize those persons who may be called upon for services in case of natural or man-mad disasters. They are re* ceiving smallpox vaccination, diphtheria-tetanus toxoid, poliomyelitis vaccine and typhoid-paratyphoid vaccine. Tn Rappahannock County 24 employees are receiving these immunizations now.
