Old-age, survivors and disability insurance benefits are becoming increasingly important as a community resource according to Mrs. Hazel F. Daly, District Manager of the local office of the Social Security Administration.
$28,903.00 is paid monthly in social security benefits in Rappahannock County. This is an increase of about 17% over last year’s figures. While the benefits are intended primarily for the beneficiaries’ economic security, they help business in the community generally. Most of the money is spent immediately for food, clothing, and other necessities.
At the present time, social security benefits are being paid at a rate of over one billion dollars a 'month. “There are several reasons for the increase,” Mrs. Daly said. There are more aged people; benefits are now payable at age 62; and less social security credit is needed to meet the eligibility requirements for benefits.
The average old-age benefit nationally for December 1961 was $74.04 for a retired worker. In the State of Virginia, the average benefit was $67.20.
