Protect Livestock Although it would be impossible for some farmers to protect their livestock, most could do it if warned in time, by simply putting them in the barn. Bams built in| the hillside (bank barns) offer excellent protection on the lower floors, and a mow of hay or straw would filter out much of the damaging radiation. Radiation from a nuclear or atomic bomb decays rapidly. In seven hours it is one tenth as strong; in forty-nine hours it is only one one-hundredth of the initial force. This means that some fanners would be able to go outside forj short periods of time to care for livestock and do other farm chores sooner than many have been led to believe.
