Old man winter blasted into ' • town in high style a day earlier than his official ex, pected arrival and has asserted himself to an extreme | almost every day since. . Snow, rain, sleet, hail, below freezing temperatures and icy winds accompanied , |Mr. Winter. jf On Friday, December 21, snow blanketed the area and late afternoon brought sleet and rain making travel hazardous. Christmas Eve arid Day snow fell again and all day Saturday snow fell, foli lowed by sleet, hail and raih. Falling temperatures turned the slush into solid sheets •of ice which still remain. School scheduled to open after the holidays on January > 2, has been postponed since the roads traveled by busses . are still very dangerous. Only main highways are !■! clear. Skyline Ski Area was open ‘for the holidays, but skiing was poor because of' the sleet and freezing rain which • * made slopes dangerous. High winds prevented the making ■; of artificial snow for a cover. The catamount slope was open though only a few of the very brave dared to try it. According to Frank Louckes, manager of the ski area, Skyline will be open this coming weekend. Instructors will be available for lessons on Saturday and Sunday and ski equipment may be rented at the area. Food is on sale at Skyline and a warming hut available. Accompanying unusually '4; cold weather were two chimney fires in Amissville; one at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Maddox Tapp and the other at the Wilson Jeffries home. Amissville Fire Department answered both calls and no extensive damage wae done to either house. Tuesday night, January 1, the house of Reg Aylor near Washington and all of the contents were completely destroyed by fire.
