Takes Good Management
Maintaining winter egg production in the laying flock takes good management, says Dr. C. E. Holmes, of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute poultry department. Once a flock drops in rate of lay, it is difficult if not impossible to get it back to the previous high level. It is easier, he says, to so
manage the flock to avoid j marked slumps in produc- i tion. Controlled environment housing with positive ventilation and uniform temperatures help maintain high production. Many layers, however, are kept in houses that do not allow strict environment control. Even in such houses, much can be done to improve conditions. Repairs that will eliminate drafts or stop leaks in roofs will help make more comfortable conditions for layers. Adding insulation to the roof or ceiling should help conserve heat and improve ventilation, as well as keeping the litter dryer. If litter is already damp, add lime and stir the litter.
