“New Look* Snow Law The arrival of snow on the local hunting scene has in previous seasons, meant a temporary lull in hunting activity. In fact far too often the sportsman has had to sit idly by and watch the seasons run out on him. With the exception of quail hunting this problem no longer exists, as this year for the first time in many seasons its legal to hunt in the snow.
While this new law means more days afield it also means that the hunter and his dogs will have to develop new techniques as the habits and haunts of game change when snow covers our woods and fields. It probably also means that many Virginia sportsmen now accustomed to setting aside their guns when the snow starts to fall are going to have to adjust their thinking and accept a new responsibility. All wildlife suffers during long periods of severe weather and no proper thinking sportsman is going to hunt game while it is groggy and reeling. Let us take a snow run down on our central Virginia species.
Quail
Quail are the one species still on the protected list when snow blankets our hunting grounds. The local game warden should be consulted whenever there is doubt as to whether or not there is sufficient snow to invoke the law.
Rabbits
Rabbits may be hunted in the snow and this liberalization of our laws opens up an intire new field for the rabjit hunter and his beagles. I
