Most of the 30 counties show ed significant gains and in none of the seven counties where the kill dropped did the decrease amount to more than 50 animals. Most of the important deer hunting counties in the group showed increases of 10% to 20%. Even Shenandoah County which experienced a 50% drop last year had an increase of over 6%. Bath County led the western group with 1,349 deer followed closely by Augusta with 1,243 and Rockingham with 1,203. Game biologists interpret this year's deer kill data as evidence that the either sex shooting of the past several years has finally whittled the herd to the proper size and is paying off in healthier deer and better annual fawn production. Deer range in most western counties has been rapidly growing into mature timber during recent years leaving less food eabh year for the big deer herds found in that area. The examination of deer at checking stations during the past 5 years has shown a shortage of fawns and evidence of poor general nutrition.
