A majority of your county agent's time is still being spent computing emergency drought rations with farmers based on present values and forage analysis. Reports were received during the week on six hay samples; three submitted by W. L. Payne of Amissvllle and a like number by William A. Carrigan, who recently purchased Horse Shoe Farm from Harvey Janney. Since silos will be opened most any day, silage samples can be expected. Since the drought made it more difficult to judge the proper maturity of corn to be ensiled, we anticipate some fancy odors about the court house when samples start com ing in.
Chief observation during the week regarding livestock feeds: mixtures of concentrates are being ground much too fine especially for cattle and sheep. As examples: shelled corn need not be ground at all for sheep or calves; for steers and beef cows, for optinum digestibility grains of corn should be cracked into 3-4 pieces. Of course this is about impossible as in operating a hammer mill at the slowest operating speed and using a 3/4* screen you will still get some dust. For older cattle make it a rule to grind whole grains as
coarsely as you possibly can.
