Against Ignorance
If you have been reading either the Washington, D. C. or the Richmond newspapers during the past ten days, you have read the lines numerous times that War has been declared against poverty and ignorance by the present administration. These old enemies of yours and mine, poverty and ignorance, rule the lives of people who so often are unable to help protect themselves against either They seem to go together, like two peas in a pod. Therefore, my first reaction to the President's message to Congress on his proposal to declare war on poverty and Ignorance was mild and I reacted like I would if you said you were against sin and for motherhood. I’d agree that that was good, but I’d not expect to see any concrete results. Well, I’m always running into surprises. This past Saturday, I was invited to attend in Richmond, the Virginia Congress of Parents and Teachers Legislative Conference. It was there that I found people actually concerned with your and my children, and the removal of ignorance and poverty from their personal lives, to the extent possible. These are people who are dedicated to influencing and securing laws which will improve the welfare of children and youth in the fields of education and social and economic,well-being. And whether you know it or not, what they do, or fail to do, has an impact on your family and their future.
