Apple Disease Tests
Washington — Representative John O. Marsh, Jr,, has urged Secretary of Agriculture Orville L. Freeman to consider favorably an intensified research program on the causes and control of York Spot, a disease affecting the York Imperial apple. “While- considerable research has been done, it is obvious that the work must be accelerated and expanded*,the 7th District Representative wrote Freeman. Marsh noted that many Virginia orchardists had been affected adversely by this disease, which is peculiar to the York, an apple grown extensively in the State. In the letter to Freeman, he stated: "Because the York Imperial represents a significant fraction of apple production in the Appalachian Belt, York Spot is causing substantial econom ic loss. It is my understanding that the horticultural societies and processor organizations of the Appalachian area will present to you a proposal for an intensified research program aimed at pinpointing causes of York Spot and developing effective controls in order to minimize losses from this disease. I am taking the liberty of writing you at this time, therefore, to ask your most careful consideration of the material which will be presented to you in this matter.*
